Yes the Coasters are great but the T's are good.

Mazda box I believe is an overdrive, and yes it would bolt on as the mazda engine is the perkins. Be it firearms or V8 engines, the question is not "why should you have them? I think you will find the Mazda gearboxes also have a 2 speed splitter between the bell housing and main box Although not a true splitter you can get a few more "inbetween" gears. You might Laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at you because you're all the same.

Yes I have heard that some of the boxes have the splitter giving 10 different ratios. But just as many are just 5 speed. I will have to find a truck to have a look at the linkage set up and how it works in the truck. Is the ford trader the same?

If it is a gearbox that you can split gears ,split every gear that is what they are made for ,but you don't have to if you dont want to,vertuley it is giving you a half a gear every time you split,that is going down or going up,hope this helps.

Some Jap busses and trucks had the spltter box as an option on some models and some did not. Both Mazda and Nissan, not seen them on a Toyota.

The usual method of using them IMHO is to put them in the high range when on flat country and put them in the low range when in hilly country or the city. In other words you are just changing the overall gearing to suit the terrain. Using it as a splitter on the normal gears is just a waste of effort. The torque spread of the motors is good and the load not excessive in a bus so why bother. I have had one in a Nissan motorhome and that is how I found it useful.

I have also used them in Mazda and Nissan trucks and also used them like I have described. But just ignore it if you like and nothing much wasted. Hi Brian, thanks. So the thing I am not clear on, is which position is high and low on the splitter.

Is low when the lever is closer to the dash or to the floor. When you engage it do you need to have your foot on the clutch or can it just be done as you drive. It's a bit of a minefield. I'm thinking of finding a truck driver to perhaps give me some tips, I am the kind or person that needs to see things done physically rather than theoretically to make sense of it all.

Its a LandRover Series 3 that has been fitted with a Perkins 4. I had a shiny SL 10 speed box 5 speed with lay shaft splitter out of a Mazda T I chose this gearbox as in the T it was mated to the Mazda HA engine so should be an easy conversion.

The car has been sitting for the last 2 years so its not in pristine condition and will need a fair bit of body work. I started by pulling the wings off and giving it a bit of a touch up with a pressure washer. Then pulling the engine and gearbox.

As the firewall and floor will need to be significantly modified to suit the far larger gearbox and remote mounted transfer case I also decided to completely strip back the front part of the body.

The new gearbox temporally mated to the engine. In the picture you can see that the starter is mounted from the gearbox side of the flywheel, and also the bell housing is substantially larger than the Series equivalent. I will mount this behind the chassis member behind the gearbox and will run a two piece prop shaft to the front diff and a baby single piece shaft down to the rear diff.

Well at least that's the plans. Sounds like a very interesting project. I look forward to further progress reports. I'm looking forward to this one as it progresses. This is the nature of truck range change gearboxes. The next update: I put the engine and gearbox back in the car so I could check the new gearbox clearances, start taking the measurements for the gearbox mounts, and see how much the firewall needs to be trimmed up.

As it turns out the firewall needs a lot of trimming, the cross member under the bell housing may also need a bit of modification. The firewall is currently at the sandblasters, when it comes back I will give it a quick touch of primer and start repairing the rust and will cut out the panel above the bell housing. After looking at some of the other projects on the forum I got jealous and wanted mine to look as pretty as theirs.

So in my stupidity I started pulling more body panels off, with the plan being to take it back to bare chassis and paint every thing. So far I have stripped it all back except for the tub. But I found some more cancer. This got me thinking which is always a bad signI wouldn't mind being able to go roofless occasionally. So my body options are: Replace the 5 Door body with a 3 Door one.
